Important Graduation Update

Graduation Update

We look forward to welcoming all students and guests on 5 June. The most recent state guidance allows for students to invite friends and family without restriction. Tickets are no longer needed and all friends and families are welcome. Please read on for other important graduation information.

  1. Processional

    1. After reviewing the safety proctors, we have decided that students will process in at the start of graduation.  More details will be provided but all graduates must arrive by 8:00AM on graduation day to line up in the correct order.  Upon arrival, family and guests can proceed to the chairs in the field and/or bleachers.  All 2021 students should report to the identified area behind the home bleachers on the lower field.

  2. Record Name Pronunciation

    1. To correctly pronounce students’ names at graduation, we are asking each graduate to record themselves saying their name three times on the following flipgrid: https://flipgrid.com/513348ce  Please complete this record by Wednesday, June 2

  3. Not Attending Graduation

    1. If a graduate is not planning to attend graduation, we will complete this form so that we can accurately assign seats.

  4. Masks

    1. As stated in last Friday’s blog, attendees and staff at not required to wear masks while outside at graduation.

  5. Graduation FAQ

    1. Students and families are encouraged to review this Frequently Asked Questions document for additional information.

Do students have to wear masks while outdoors?

Effective May 18, this guidance update applies to recess, physical education, youth sports, and outdoor learning environments. Adults must continue to wear masks outdoors if distancing cannot be maintained. At this time, adults and students must continue to wear masks indoors.

Graduation Ceremony Update, 2021 Class Act Awards, & NCTE Winners

Remember when I sent detailed instructions for Graduation on 7 May and 17 May?  Well, you can ignore most of that information due to the latest guidance provided by the Governor and Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).  It will not be a traditional graduation, but the latest announcement moves us away from the information shared on the 7th and 17th and closer to a typical graduation.  Please read on for additional details with the caveat that they are subject to change.  Additional correspondence coming early next week.

Please welcome me in celebrating the Class Act Award winners for their years of dedicated service, and a hardy thank you to all the volunteers that help making Class Act a unique and successful endeavor.

Lastly, congratulations to Mia Caruso and  Grace Waldeck for winning a prestigious writing award.  Details included below.  Have a great weekend.

 2021 Class Act Award Winners

Celebrating Your Service to the School and Community

The 2021 Class Act Awards night was canceled, like many school events.  However, the sponsors of the event, listed below, want to be sure that the incredible individual community service efforts of CCHS students do not go unrecognized.  Congratulations to all!

CCHS Awards Community Service is an integral part of the total learning experience at CCHS.  Students must complete at least 40 hours of service for graduation, but many students volunteer for much more than the minimum.  These awards recognize the graduating seniors who have volunteered over 100 hours of their time in their careers at CCHS.

Rotary Club of Concord   The Rotary Club of Concord recognizes the contribution of young people in our schools and rewards them for Community Service, Integrity, Kindness, Leadership, and Civic Responsibility. Each club and sport at CCHS has an opportunity to choose their award recipients, as nominated by their group advisors or coaches.

President’s Volunteer Service Awards   2Volunteer, the Concord-Carlisle community-based organization which assists CCHS in its Community Service program, is a designated certifying organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.  The Award is given by the Points of Light Foundation, as inspired by George H.W. Bush, to recognize the best in American spirit and to encourage Americans to improve their communities through volunteer service and civic participation.  Students are eligible for consideration for this award if they have demonstrated outstanding community service over the course of any consecutive 12-month period.  The Young Adult (service completed above age of 16) Bronze Award is given for 100-174 hours of service, the Silver Award for 175-249 hours, and the Gold Award for 250 or more hours.  The Teen (service completed before age 16) Bronze Award is given for 50-74 hours of service, the Silver Award for 75-99 hours of service, and the Gold Award for 100 or more hours of service.

Concord-Carlisle Community Chest    Awards are given by the Concord-Carlisle Community Chest to CCHS students who have demonstrated initiative and commitment to an organization or a volunteer project within the area of direct human services.  The recipients are selected by the Community Chest Board of Directors.

Maureen Taggert Award  This award is given to a CCHS senior who exhibits exemplary community service participation in Recreation Department programs.  It is named in honor of a beloved Concord Recreation employee who lifelong gave selflessly of her time.

NEADS Award  The National Education for Assistance Dog Services trains service dogs to help individuals with disabilities, and is interested in service in general to the disabled.  The Award is given to a member of the junior or senior class who has demonstrated exemplary community service in the area of working with individuals with disabilities.

Contest Winners: National Council for the Teachers of English Writing

Congratulations to Grace Waldeck and Mia Caruso for winning the "Certificate of Superior Writing," the highest designation in the contest.

Mia Caruso and Grace Waldeck, Students at Concord Carlisle High School, Win 2021 NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing

Mia Caruso and Grace Waldeck, both class of 2022, have been selected for a 2021 Achievement Award in Writing, given by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

The NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing is a school-based writing program established in 1957 to encourage high school students to write and to recognize some of the best student writers in the nation. Only students who are juniors may participate. Schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, American schools abroad, and the Virgin Islands are eligible to nominate students for the writing program.

Caruso and Waldeck, as well as a third student, Grace Paradis, were nominated by a panel of two CCHS English teachers as a part of the department's annual in-house NCTE writing contest, during which their writing submissions were selected from a pool of 22 competitors identified by the English department as highly skilled writers. These nominees then each submitted two pieces of writing to the national level contest, where two independent judges scored each submission on expression of ideas, language use, and unique perspective and voice.

"CCHS students have a solid track record in winning NCTE awards at the national level" said CCHS English teacher David Nurenberg, who has coordinated CC's in-house NCTE contest since 2015. "It's a credit both to their hard work, and to the excellent work of my colleagues in the English department for helping them develop those skills -- especially during this year of unprecedented stress and disruption thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic."

The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) is the nation’s most comprehensive literacy organization, supporting more than 25,000 teachers across the preK–college spectrum. Through the expertise of its members, NCTE has served at the forefront of every major improvement in the teaching and learning of English and the language arts since 1911. www.ncte.org

Final Exams, Graduation, End-of-Year Senior Information, Challenge Success Survey, MVP Training, & Stand by Me Premier,

I write with the sincere hope everyone is doing well. Hopefully, the beautiful weather serves as a much-needed antidote to the relentless inundation of COVID-related news and rules that permeate our daily lives. A COVID mode of consciousness has become an instinct like how a baby knows to hold its breath underwater. Asking my children, "do you have a mask," has become routine and ingrained. The news of vaccines for students brings more optimism that the future is better than our immediate past.

With this optimism, I write with necessary information regarding final exams, end-of-year information for seniors, Challenge Success Survey information, and a bit more. Please read on for more details and join me in looking forward to brighter skies.

A few additional exam notes:

- Classes not offering exams will meet during the exam block and students are expected to be present during those classes. They are not optional. Teachers will use this time for assessments, presentations, group work, new learning activities, etc.

- Reading Period: We will have a one-day reading period on Wednesday, June 9.  On that day, no new content may be taught and no assessments may be given.

Challenge Success Survey

I am excited to announce we are re-engaging with Challenge Success.  For those unfamiliar with the organization, I encourage you to click on the link to explore more on their mission. Here is an excerpt that encapsulates their vision.

"At Challenge Success, we believe that our society has become too focused on grades, test scores, and performance, leaving little time for kids to develop the necessary skills to become resilient, ethical, and motivated learners. We partner with schools, families, and communities to embrace a broad definition of success and to implement research-based strategies that promote student well-being and engagement with learning. After all, success is measured over the course of a lifetime, not at the end of a semester."

As part of this re-engagement we are administering a student survey in Advisory before the close of school.  I include a parent information sheet/opt-out form.  If you are opting out of the survey please return the

Their website has information for colleagues, parents, faculty, and students about the surveys, including sample questions, FAQs, and pricing.

4th Annual Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) Training

May 1 and 2, the following students ran the 4th annual Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) Training: Ruth Benyo, Anna Brooks, Audrey Carter, Ahria Desai, Charlie Eaton, Ben Grace, Corinne Herr, Emma McCollum, Chiara Petracek, Phoebe Shudt, Eva Shudt.

The program trains students to identify signs of gender-based bias, harassment, abuse, or violence and consider many ways of responding.  The MVP Club is grateful to the CEF and PA Association grants for supporting the work they do to prevent gender-based violence!

End-of Year-Activities And Emmy Nomination

Today marks the 10th or 100th day following April vacation. Even a flawed, illogical argument could sway me to believe either. Typically, what's easy is doing what is familiar and comfortable, but I am so happy the entire CCHS community did not pursue the easier path. It is so great to have more students and staff in the building, and yesterday watching our student-athletes participate in a wide range of activities under bright blue skies felt, dare I say, something resembling normal.

With this in mind, I provide information regarding senior week activities and end-of-year celebrations for seniors. The events will not be traditional, and they will come with needed safety protocols, but I am confident they will be safe, fun, and memorable.  Have a great weekend.

MCAS Reminder

MCAS Reminder

Students will take their MCAS ELA Session I test tomorrow morning, Wednesday, May 5, and Session II on Thursday, May 6.  Please remind your student of the following:

What to bring:  laptop, charger, pencils or pens, and something to do after they have finished. (They won't be able to access their laptop or any other electronic device until they are dismissed from the testing room.)

When:  Arrive at school at the normal time.  Proceed directly to their assigned testing space.  Please be on time - it makes the day run smoother.  The testing period officially ends at 11:35 am tomorrow, Wednesday, May 5.  Buses will depart CCHS at 2:41 p.m.

Where:  Please report to the room assigned by last name (an email was sent to your student with their room assignments) unless their teacher has specifically told them to report to a different room.

Some tips:
  • Restart your computer the night before or earlier in the morning.
  • Don't forget your charger.
  • Bring a water bottle if desired.

As a reminder, all current 10th graders (YOG 2023) will be required to take the MCAS.  Here are the relevant dates:

  • May 5 and 6: ELA MCAS

  • May 19 and 20: Math MCAS

  • On the two Wednesday test dates (May 5 and 19) we do not need all busses due to the fact that only sophomores are in-person. Most students will finish before 2:41, and we welcome parent/guardians picking students up at CCHS when their student completes testing.

  • On the two Thursday test dates (May 6 and May 20), sophomores will proceed to on-campus, in-person learning after testing is concluded.

  • Lunch will be available on all testing days.

For all four testing dates, only grade 10 students will be on campus.  All grade 9, 11, and 12 students will be virtual and attend their classes via zoom from home.
