Remembering September 11, 2001

Dear School Community,

Twenty-two years ago today, our nation faced tragic events that changed our country’s history forever. On this day, we remember and honor the lives that were lost and also honor the bravery of the first responders who worked tirelessly to support the needs of the people of New York City and their greater communities. For our current students, you were not yet alive to see or witness the tragic events of this day. You were also not alive to see the resilience, acts of compassion, or the way our country united following the events of September 11, 2001. For our faculty and staff, it is a day we will never forget and one where we can likely recall the specific details of where we were and how we felt.

There is no silver lining to be drawn from September 11, 2001; however, one byproduct of that day was how America rallied in support of one another. The United States, for the first time in my lifetime, felt more like "we." It is unfortunate that as a country, too often, we divide ourselves into two parts. I would like for all of us to use this day of reflection and remembrance to take the principles of community and unity that followed the days of September 11, 2001, and think about how we can do better. How can we all be better, more empathetic people, who contribute positively to our community? We would like to challenge each of you to reflect on that question and think about how we, together as a community, can make CCHS a better place for everyone who is part of this extraordinary school.
