Proposed Schedule Change Decision, Kasey Stewart, Henry Johnstone, Grace Pacelle, CCHS Red Cross Club & More

Proposed Schedule Change Information

A Time and Learning Committee started the process of exploring a new schedule for CCHS in the fall of 2015.  The process was detailed, comprehensive, and thorough as schedules ranging from our immediate neighbors to high-performing schools on the west coast were reviewed and examined.

In early 2016, the Time and Learning Committee made a recommendation to principal Peter Badalament to adopt a schedule that is nearly identical to the one that was proposed this fall, less a few minor changes.  For various reasons, principal Badalament postponed the implementation of the recommended schedule.

A committee reconvened this fall to continue the process.  The Schedule Committee did an excellent job seeking feedback from all stakeholders.  The entire process was inclusive and transparent.  Before the break, we shared with staff the feedback provided by all stakeholders.

On Tuesday, January 3rd we held a faculty meeting to discuss the proposed schedule.  The conversation was professional and constructive.  At the conclusion of the meeting, we held a vote where it was decided to continue with our current schedule and not adopt the proposed schedule.

A healthy school consistently evaluates prevailing practices to ensure it is performing at optimal levels. The schedule review allowed for such an assessment.   Another positive by-product is a general consensus on a few key issues.
  • We all agree that educational equity is imperative, and creating the conditions for an equitable high school experience for all students is of seminal importance.
  • We need to explore developing additional opportunities for staff members to collaborate both cross-disciplinary and within departments.
  • Finding creative ways to increase student access to electives.
I want to commend all members of both committees for their hard work and dedication to this process.

Although I was not in need of it, taking part in this process reaffirmed why I accepted the offer to be the principal of CCHS.   All stakeholders care deeply about the quality of the education at CCHS; a vital and necessary ingredient for a healthy, vibrant educational community.

I am proud that the staff thoughtfully and collaboratively worked together throughout this process. A highly competent and dedicated staff working collaboratively will continue to serve us well in our never-ending quest for improvement.

CCHS Red Cross Club

CCHS Red Cross Club completed a gift wrapping fundraiser at Sears. After working to gather donated materials at CCHS and the Beede Center in December, and after getting approval from Sears at the Burlington Mall, students set up tables and wrapped gifts for donations and raised  $1,167.65. This money will be donated to the Red Cross to help those in need of food and shelter.

Students participated in club meetings devoted to "Gift Wrapping 101" lessons.  Kasey Stewart said, "we all got pretty good at gift wrapping. Everyone worked over the course of two weekends prior to Christmas day. Mrs. Gillis, our faculty advisor, and many of the members volunteered their time to wrap as many gifts as fast as they could. We often had long lines of people waiting. Everyone worked as a team, and I think we all learned how much work it takes to raise this amount of money."

Learning Commons Update
By Robin Cicchetti

January blog post from the Learning Commons

We are looking for 4 student and 4 parent volunteers to join a faculty working group! For the past two summers the faculty and staff have been enjoying a shared summer reading experience. Based on this, we want to open this activity up to the CCHS community with a "twist" on summer reading. Instead of a list of books, we are proposing a question-based format for consideration over the summer. For additional information please read the LC blog post.
